Northern and U de Hearst strike credit transfer agreement

Starting this fall, bilingual students in ten programs at Northern College will be able to transfer their credits over to l’Université de Hearst, and apply them towards a degree.

Northern’s VP Academic, Dr. Audrey Penner, says the pathway program is believed to be the first in Ontario between an English-language college and a French-language university.

“If they are francophone or are bilingual and speak French, they are able to take the programs here that might not be offered at a francophone college,” she outlines, “but then move in to the university realm and study in their own language to get their degree.”

Aside from the opportunity for college grads to get a degree, Penner says the pathway program falls into line with the government focus on training a highly-skilled, bilingual work force.

“Our francophone colleges do a fantastic job in terms of programming, but not every program is available in every single area.  So I think this is where we help contribute to the skills priorities that are out there for the colleges.  It’s about economic development at the same time, to make sure that we’re providing the right access for students to meet individual needs in our communities.”

The program between the two post-secondary institutions takes effect this fall.
