‘No ice is safe ice’: OPP

Ice fishing, snowmobiling or skiing, OPP Constable Michelle Simard says whatever you’re doing on northern lakes and rivers this time of year calls for extra caution.

“Our motto is no ice is safe ice,” she says.

Longer days and warmer temperatures can affect the thickness and therefore the safety of the ice.

“Some of the stuff that you should be bringing is making sure that you’re wearing a floater jacket,” Simard advises, “having ice picks and just really knowing what the ice depth is there.”

She adds that thick ice in one spot does not guarantee the same thickness even a few feet away.

“The temperatures are varying, so that causes the ice to melt and freeze and all that stuff, so we really need to be cautious when we’re venturing onto the lakes and rivers in our area.”
