Becoming a parent no longer threatens a city councillor’s seat

Any member of Timmins council doesn’t have to worry anymore about losing his or her seat at the table, if a bundle of joy arrives in his or her life.

As part of a fairly lengthy housekeeping agenda at this week’s regular meeting, council approved several amendments and additions to policies, bringing the city in line with recent updates to the Ontario Municipal Act.

One of them allows for any council member – male or female – to take up to 20 weeks pregnancy and parental leave.  Council has the option to extend it.

In the past, an absence from a certain number of consecutive meetings resulted in the seat being declared vacant.
