Free income tax service available for low income earners

For more than 25 years, Peggy Bendell of Porcupine has been filing income tax forms for low-income people, under the federal Community Volunteer Income Tax Program.

Bendell notes that the service is free. “If they want to make a donation, I say ‘here’s a list of charities you can donate it to.” That way, they’ve felt they thanked me.”

And she promises that everything is confidential.

“Everything goes back to the client.  Everything is erased from my computer, so when they come next year, I can’t log in and get last year’s report so I get the name and address already in there.  I have to start from scratch.”

Bendell and Catherine Cribbs offer the service in the East End, so you don’t have to drive into Timmins.  And in Timmins, there’s an office in the old Pick of the Crop location at the 101 Mall.
