March Break crackdown on distracted driving

Police across Ontario are taking advantage of increased traffic during March Break to stage a campaign to reduce distracted driving.

OPP Constable Michelle Simard says it will specifically target the use of handheld electronic devices.

“So basically people who are caught talking on their cell phones, texting, dialling,” she says, “you know, anything that has to do with a handheld device, we’re going to be focusing on that during the March Break.”

Simard notes that fines went up on January 1st.  A first offence will now cost you a $1,000 fine, three demerit points and an automatic three-day licence suspension.

“We have several traffic campaigns throughout the year and this happens to be one that ends up in March, and this is the perfect time with more people on the road, more people travelling to and from destinations.”

…And more kids in those cars, too, Simard says.
