The future of the Trestle Bridge is unclear, but important to Iroquois Falls. Timmins-James Bay MP Charlie Angus says the bridge and the mill are going to be key assets in the town’s future.
He says if the mill and the bridge are torn down, it is going to be difficult to come back from that,and find alternatives. Angus says the assets are there now, and they need to be maintained.
There is a narrow window to do something with the bridge and the mill. Although the chances of another paper mill coming in are low, they are still excellent resources, says Angus.
When asked what he recommends the next step should be, Angus says the community needs to put a plan into place.
He says there needs to be a committee to look at the assets, the ideas, and the potential. That committee can then go to the public, and to council, and discuss what is possible.
Resolute is expected to take sale offers on both the bridge and the mill next month.
As of right now, the heat will stay on in the mill until February or March, and the power will be on indefinitely. If the heat gets turned off during the winter, the building’s infrastructure will be compromised.
