‘EVENING OF APPLAUSE’ COMING UP MARCH 25TH

An event with its roots in South African apartheid and the United Nations effort to end discrimination is happening next month in Timmins.

The fifth annual “Evening of Applause” on March 25th at TH&VS is a joint effort of all school boards in the city, along with Northern College, Collège Boréal, Université de Hearst and Algoma University.

In his capacity as community relations officer for the English Catholic board, Andrew Marks told city council about the event at Tuesday’s meeting.

“Within the schools, we’re highlighting students who do extraordinary things that all relate to being a friendlier community, to eliminating racial discrimination, to highlight those students that go above and beyond,” he said.

City Hall sponsors the Wall of Fame at the main library. Marks says nominations for the wall are open.

“This is a resident who has reduced or fought discrimination of any kind,” he explained, “ has been a part of solutions in welcoming new immigrants to our community, either locally, regionally, nationally or internationally.”

Application forms are available at the mayor’s office.
