ANNUAL WINTER HIKING DAY THIS SATURDAY

Fresh air, sunshine (hopefully), and learning all in one.  That’s what the Mattagami Region Conservation Authority and the Wintergreen Fund for Conservation have planned for your family this Saturday.

The event is Winter Hiking Day. It starts at noon at Hersey Lake, with a winter survival presentation by Timmins-Porcupine Search and Rescue.

MRCA planner Crystal Percival says that’s followed by two Wintergreen members leading an ecology hike.

“The hike should take about a half hour, 40 minutes,” she explains, ”which will be a guided hike around some of the trails at Hersey Lake.  It’ll talk about the types of plants, animals that you can find out there, how they’ve adapted to survive our harsh, cold Northern Ontario winter.”

Percival says this is the seventh annual winter hike.

“We also hold hikes throughout the year, so we normally do a series in the fall, spring and summer as well.”

There is no charge to participate.  Saturday’s event begins at noon.
