144 CLOSURE EXTENDS BEYOND 24 HRS. *UPDATE: NOW REOPENED*

UPDATE: At 8:30pm Thurs., Feb. 14, OPP announced that the highway is open again, 30 hours after being closed.

We have passed the 24-hour mark of the closure of Highway 144 from Highway 101 in Timmins to the Watershed.

From the scene of a truck carrying propane that tipped over and off the road about 30 kilometres from 101, yesterday afternoon, OPP Const. Michelle Simard updates the situation.

“The highway remains closed at this time,” she says. “The crane is there now, trying to remove the tractor-trailer from the ditch.  So we can expect some more delays.”

Simard cannot estimate how long that will take.

“For public safety and the safety of all the motorists that’ll be travelling the 144, we felt it would be safer if we closed the highway.”

The truck was the only vehicle involved.  The driver was not hurt.
