FUR COUNCIL HELPS YOU TAKE YOUR KIDS ICE FISHING ON FAMILY DAY

Family Day is coming up on Monday, February 18th… and the Timmins Fur Council is marking it again this year with a free family ice fishing derby on Porcupine Lake.

Secretary Kaileigh Russell says members of the fur council aren’t just trappers.  They’re outdoors people who also hunt and fish.

“Part of the mandate in what we do with the Timmins Fur Council is provide outdoor opportunities to kids, either through education or events” she says,” and the family fishing derby is something we’ve been doing going on eight years now.”

The largest fish caught will be mounted and given to the lucky angler.

Russell says there will be a lot of other prizes, too… along with hot dogs,  hot chocolate and marshmallows to roast over fire pits on the ice.

And not to worry, if you aren’t equipped for ice fishing.

“Not every family has the set-up and the gear to get going,” Russell acknowledges. “ So it’s something that we can do.  We provide all of the roads, minnows, everything that the families need.  They just need to show up and bring themselves and their kids and have a great time out on the ice.”
