MAYOR WANTS FRANCOPHONE UNIVERSITY IN TIMMINS

The Timmins francophone community got a show of support from none other the mayor, during his State of the City speech last Thursday, Jan. 24.

George Pirie told a packed Dante Club about the value of having both Collège Boréal and l’Université de Hearst in Timmins.

“In my opinion, the cancellation of the francophone university in Toronto presents the opportunity to have the provincial government eventually apply those funds to growing the Université de Hearst here in Timmins.”

Pirie went on to add “We are the centre of the francophone community in the north, and if we’re going to have a francophone university anywhere in the province, I’m a huge proponent that it be done right here in Timmins.”

There was applause for that statement from the lunch crowd listening to the speech at the Dante Club.
