SHORTER WAIT TIMES ONE GOAL OF NEW ER SYSTEM AT TADH

Triage – determining who gets treated first in the emergency department – has recently undergone a bit of an overhaul at Timmins and District Hospital.

The hospital has adopted the electronic Canadian Triage and Acuity Scale, in the footsteps of hospitals across the province also adopting it.

Emergency department critical care unit manager Kim Bazinet.says the learning curve for workers in the department hasn’t been as steep as anticipated.

“It’s been a very collaborative effort (with)  the IT department, she remarks. “ We’ve developed a lot of front-line emergency nurses who are super users and they have been fabulous and a great asset to have into place to ensure that all the other nurses are trained appropriately and we have been giving them extra support during the training process.”

Bazinet says the admissions department has also been very helpful, as its duties change along with the new ER system. She says it is expected to improve efficiency.

“We’re hopeful that it may help assist with the wait times in the emergency department. We’re hopeful that what it will facilitate is us seeing the sicker patients first.”
