TPS OFFERS WINTER DRIVING TIPS

Winter driving season has arrived in full force.  With that in mind, Timmins Police have released a series of tips for  safely dealing with the road conditions.

Communications co-ordinator Marc Depatie – who is a retired OPP officer – says first of all, get your winter tires on.

He says all-season tires are okay, but “all-season” really means spring, summer and fall.

“If you’re on all-seasons,” he advises, “take into account that you’re not as well equipped as you should be, perhaps.  We understand sometimes there is a budget that attaches to that, but nonetheless if you can have (winter tires), let’s get them installed.”

If your winter tires aren’t brand new, Depatie says to check them for damage or wear, and have any defects fixed before installing them.

A particular hazard all winter is black ice.  Depatie says it occurs on pavement when any snow that thaws, freezes again.  The road can look clear, but he notes that it can be slippery and more challenging than it appears.  You might not see it, especially at night.

“There’s a glare on it but you wouldn’t assume there’s anything wrong until such time as perhaps you’re losing control of your vehicle.”

Depatie says bridges and areas that are in shade all day are especially prone to black ice.
