Local Canada Post Workers on Strike

Timmins postal workers are on the picket lines today as part of the rotating Canada Post strikes.

CUPW Local 624 President John Cameron says he got the call this morning that the Timmins workers will be working the picket lines. Cameron says as of right now the workers are on a 24 hr strike, so no mail will be delivered today.

He adds that the workers are fighting for health and safety, gender equality and overtime issues to be addressed in contracts. “We just had a report in that states our injury rate is five times greater than that of all the federal sectors and that is very concerning and alarming and needs to be fixed.”

Cameron wants to remind the community that the workers love the community and “the fight isn’t with the customer, the fight is with Canada Post to come to the negotiating table and reach a fair deal.”

As of now, CUPW National President Mike Palecek, Canada Post Interim President Jessica McDonald and members of their negotiating teams are meeting in Ottawa through a mediator selected by the government.
