The Incoming Council Gets a Training Session

The incoming council will be undergoing some training this weekend.

Timmins City Clerk Steph Palmateer says the new group sitting at the roundtable will be getting together for a six-hour training session of how to properly serve in their positions. Palmateer says the city is bringing Nigel Bellchamber and Fred Dean to provide the training. These two did a training session with the previous council in the spring. Palmateer says they will be covering a series of topics. “Roles and responsibilities, accountability and transparency, council policy. Things like council meetings, procedure bylaws, municipal finance, code of conduct, conflict and other authorities, regulations and legislation that affect them as municipal councillors.”

Palmateer says the session will also focus on “what potential impacts the various provincial legislation and regulation have on municipalities and their duties.”

He says it’s important that councillors get this kind of training so they know what to expect over the next four years.
