Investigation Underway after Timmins Student Falls Out of a School Bus

An investigation is underway after a boy fell out of a school bus window.

The Timmins Police Service says officers were called when a 6-year-old boy fell out of the emergency window on Monday. Conseil Scolaire Catholique De District Des Grandes Rivieres Communications Manager Richard Loiselle says this all happened as the school bus was coming to a complete stop when it happened. “The little boy was just standing on the bench, leaning against the window. All of a sudden the bar alarm went off, because all of the emergency window exists have an alarm bar, and the little boy fell out of the window. ”

TPS says the boy was taken to the hospital as a precaution but didn’t sustain any injuries. Police add that the driver is not being charged as was not at fault. The Ministry of Transportation is taking over the investigation.

The French Catholic School Board says the school bus is being sent off for an inspection. Loiselle says “the transportation company has sent the bus out to verify a mechanical failure. From what the police are saying the boy may have accidentally activated the bar, but we’re further investigating with a third party to verify if it was a mechanic mechanism malfunction.”

He adds that the school board is also reviewing its policy to ensure all the students are safe on the buses. “We will have another campaign on the importance of remaining seated while your in the school bus, and we will also place a bus monitor on that bus route because it is a bus that is quite full.”

Loiselle says this is a tragic story and the school board wants to make sure all students stay safe.
