International Students are the New Targets for a Phone Scam

A new scam is targeting international students in Timmins.

The Timmins Police Service says several international students are being targeted with phone calls from someone claiming they are from the Canadian Revenue Agency. Police say the caller is telling the students that they are required to pay a significant amount of money to pay an Immigration Tax. Officers say one victim also got a call from someone claiming to be from TPS saying the student has to pay or they will be arrested.

TPS says the situation is being investigated and officers are talking to the CRA. Police are recommending that international students contact the Canadian Revenue Agency to get proper information about the taxation policies that apply to immigrants.

TPS says anyone who receives one of these calls should report it to the CRA by clicking here or calling 1-800-495-8501.
