Library Wins Innovation and Technology Award

The Timmins Public Library is shining with a new award.

The library has received the Ontario Library Service-North Award of Excellence in Innovation and Technology. Library CEO Carole-Ann Churcher says this award is because of the work it is doing with the Digital Creator North Program.

Churcher these spaces are designed for youth aged 14 to 19 to explore technology and digital programs. “We have a Digital Youth Lead who helps the youth explore things such as film, video editing, stop-motion animation, photography, podcasting and a whole bunch of other things. There is also equipment in each of the spaces.”

Churcher says the library has teamed up with the Timmins Museum and multiple organizations in the region to bring this program to the north. She says this is because there isn’t much access to classes and programs like this for youth in the region.

“We feel that (the award) is a wonderful recognition for the work that has been done, not only by us but also the museum and out partnering locations.”

Churcher says the Digital Creator North Program has been on a hiatus for the last little bit, but it will be starting up again in November.
