School Dedicates Garden to Student

A former Golden Avenue Public School student is being honoured with a garden.

Kyle Lecuyer passed away in September 2016 from a battle with cancer.
Grade six teacher Lisa Mahon says she remembers Kyle as a beautiful, witty and charming student who would do surf down the hallways, which was one of her favourite memories. Mahon says he had beautiful blue eyes and a great smile and laugh.

Mahon says the school wanted to do something to dedicate Kyle and ended up getting some funding. “The Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario has an Earth Day Fund. It was actually suggested to us that we use that money as some sort of dedication for Kyle.”

She adds that the garden plan has been in motion for a while. “We did finish the project at the end of June. We didn’t have enough time to do the ribbon ceremony then, so we started this school year off with the ribbon cutting ceremony.”

Mahon says they were hoping for better weather for this, but the garden now sits at the front entrance of the school for all to enjoy.
