Police Prepare for Marijuana Legalization

As we get closer to the marijuana legalization date, police are preparing for the changes.

Starting Wednesday it will be legal for anyone 19 and up to buy, consume, possess and grow recreational marijuana.  The Timmins Police Service says it originally thought the province would be adopting the same regulations as the Liquor License Act for the upcoming legalization.  Chief John Gauthier says now cannabis will be under the same guidelines as the Smoke-Free Ontario Act. “So basically when we break it down, people will be able to smoke cannabis off the street, on the sidewalk and in public places.”

Gauthier adds because of these changes, not all the enforcement will fall on the police. “We’re not the tobacco police, and if it’s legalized and you can consume on the street, you are not breaking a law.”

The city says people who currently enforce the smoking bylaw, the Porcupine Health Unit and bylaw officers, will enforce cannabis.

Gauthier says there are still some uncertainties leading up to Wednesday, but police are working with their partners to ensure enforcement is proper.
