Walk for Heroes at the Parkinsons Superwalk

Timmins will be celebrating and recognizing local heroes with a walk this weekend.

The annual Parkinson Superwalk aims to raise awareness and money for the Timmins Parkinsons Support Group and hopefully a cure. Walk Coordinator Sharon Montreuil says Parkinsons is one of the three more well known neurological diseases that is associated with shaking. Montreuil says this walk is important to help raise money for research. “We need research grants to work on how to make it easier to live with Parkinsons and hopefully find a cure.”

She says this disease can be very debilitating. Montreuil adds that some research has found that activities like dancing and boxing can help improve the shaking and ward off the disease.

Registration for Sunday’s walk will open at 2:30pm at the Timmins Regional Athletic and Soccer Complex. Montreuil says this walk is different than many of the others in town. “Because a lot of the clients are in wheelchairs or walkers or not able to walk long distances, we walk around the track as many times as we can in an hour.”

The walk will start at 3:00pm. Montreuil says there will be t-shirts available for some of the participants, as well as door prizes.
