Big Boost For New Committee

An Indigenous Advisory Committee is one step closer to being a reality.
Goldcorp-Porcupine Gold Mines announced yesterday (Thursday) that they will be matching the City of Timmins’ contribution of $50 thousand to go towards initiatives stemming from the integration of the committee.
The city says action items that will benefit from the total $100 thousand investment will be centered on improving relations, inclusiveness, safety and cultural sensitivity towards the Indigenous population in the community.
City of Timmins Chief Administrative Officer Dave Landers says the next steps for the committee will take place after the municipal election in October. Landers adds that the next council will officially appoint the committee, including members of city council who will have a clear mandate.
The committee will also include six Indigenous representatives, two representatives from the business community and two members from the community at large.
