Council Looks at an Aquatic Centre Update

An update on the proposed aquatic and multi-use facility is coming to council tomorrow.

A report from the project contractor Perkins + Will includes design elements already discussed like an eight-lane competition pool, family-friendly play zone and leisure pool. Other elements previously discussed include squash courts and an indoor walking track.

The report says the project aimed at replacing the Archie Dillon Sportsplex is estimated to cost $48-million. This includes $36-million for construction and $11.9-million for soft costs.

At a public meeting held in the winter, some residents questioned the ongoing costs and the overall need for the facility. Mayor Steve Black says the project will not go ahead unless the city gets funding from upper levels of government.

The full report will be presented at tomorrow’s council meeting starting at 6:00pm at City Hall.
