Timmins Man Faces Arson and Assault Charges

A Timmins man is facing multiple charges including arson and assault.

The Timmins Police Service says emergency crews responded to an apartment fire at a multi-unit building on Balsam Street South yesterday. The Timmins Fire Department put out the fire that caused about $20,000 worth of damages to the building. The fire department says the fire was deemed suspicious so police started an investigation.

TPS says officers arrested a 27-year-old man. He is facing charges of:

  • Arson with disregard for human life
  • Failing to comply with a probation order

Police say the investigation also revealed that the man was involved in a fight between two others in the building before leaving the scene of the fire. TPS reports say the 27-year-old may have pulled out an edged weapon and threatened to harm one of the other people. Based on this, police say he is facing additional charges of:

  • Assault with a weapon
  • Uttering threats
  • Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
  • Failing to comply with a probation order

He is in custody awaiting a bail hearing.

Police say access to most of the units in the building are open. Officers say the only one that is restricted is where the fire took place. This is to allow police to continue the investigation.
