Fire Near Night Hawk Lake Grows to 100 Hectares

A forest fire at Night Hawk Lake in Timmins has grown to 100 hectares.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry says this fire has grown and is not yet under control. Fire Information Officer Shayne McCool says the rain that we received this morning was a big help for the firefighters.

McCool says crews will continue to try and get a hold on the fire.

This is one of 55 active forest fires across the northeastern region. About 24 of these fires are out of control and 30 are either being held, under control or being observed.

McCool says Timmins is now in a fire restriction zone. He says this means anyone caught with an open fire can face charges up to $25,000, three months in jail and being held accountable for the costs of suppressing the forest fire. He says water bombers are not cheep.

McCool says if people can comply with that, then officers can focus on the fires caused by lightening in the area.
