Helmets On Campaign launches in Timmins

Wearing your helmet this summer could get you some prizes.

The Timmins Police Service is launching its annual summer “Helmets On” campaign. This is where you can get prizes for wearing your helmet while riding your bike around town. Constable Rick Lemieux says officers will be handing out gift cards to places like Science Timmins, Hollinger Mini-Putt, Neo Laser Tag and the Sportsplex to kids wearing their helmets. Lemieux says instead of punishing those who aren’t being safe with a ticket, police will be rewarding and encouraging people with prizes. He says it’s so important for kids and adults to wear their helmets.

Lemieux says there have been times in Timmins when a helmet saved a life. He says there was an incident at Southern and Mountjoy when a child was hit by a vehicle and the helmet cracked in half. Lemieux says if it weren’t for the helmet, that would have been the kid’s skull.

Lemieux says as part of the campaign, officers will be handing out gift cards to places like Science Timmins, Hollinger Mini-Putt, Neo Laser Tag and the Sportsplex to kids wearing their helmets. He says officers will stop to hand out prizes as long as they are not on their way to a call.

Every child will also have their name put into a draw for a new bike. Lemieux says adults found with their helmets on will have their names put in for a car detailing.
