May is Recognized as Huntington’s Disease Awareness Month

May is being recognized as Huntington’s Disease Awareness Month.

A group of volunteers looking to create a Huntington Disease Society chapter in Timmins will be spreading awareness about the disease and raising money for a cure all month.

Spokesperson Lynn Walker describes the disease as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and ALS all wrapped up into one. Walker says the group is hoping to help support families affected by this disease.

She says after a flag raising last year, about 5 families came forward saying they are affected by the disease. She adds that she thought she was the only one with relatives who have Huntington’s, but now they can all support each other.

Walker says the group will be hosting its second “Bowl for the Cure” event on May 12th. She says that you can come out for a fun night of bowling, as well as a silent aution, 50/50 draw and bake sale to raise money. The event will cost $25 and run from 7:00pm to 9:30pm at Midtown Bowl. Walker says the hope is to raise money for a cure.

Walker says last year the event raised $3,200, and is hoping to raise more this year. She says the city will be lighting up the head-frame in the blue and purple Huntington Disease colours for the whole month in support.
