Update on Bodies Found in Vehicle Fire

Investigators are still at the scene of a vehicle fire where the bodies of four people were found.

The Timmins Police Service says the investigation into Friday’s vehicle fire is moving at a healthy pace. TPS Communications Coordinator Marc Depatie says at about 6:00 Friday evening, a fire on Price Road, about six kilometers south of Dalton Road was reported.

Police say at this point foul play is not being ruled out, but there is no threat to public safety. Depatie says the licence and registration of the vehicle belongs to a Timmins resident, but that is all he could say on the identity of the victims. Depatie says police are not giving out information on the ages of the victims until the coroners office investigates.

Depatie says in terms of the victims, what he can say is that this was an unexpected turn of events for them.

Depatie adds this is believed to be an isolated incident and it is not likely that the person responsible will re-offend. He says it is a tragic event for the community and a benchmark event for the police service. He adds that TPS has the lead on the investigation, but it’s working with surrounding agencies.

TPS says a family has been notified of the investigation so they are braced for the eventually positive identification of the victims and the possible outcome.

The scene of the fire is blocked off and controlled by police while the investigation is still ongoing. Timmins Police say Price Road is closed at the intersection of Dalton Road and Pine Street South. Depatie says police are working hard to be able to open the road to cottages and sportsmen activities as soon as possible.

Police say they are looking for any information on the event, whether it’s that nothing happened or you saw something suspicious to narrow down the time frame. Officers say the vehicle they are looking for information on is a 2004 Chrysler Intrepid, either blue or green. Police say they can’t really determine the exact colour at this point due to the damage from the fire.

Anyone with information is asked to call police or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS. Police will provide an update to the media tomorrow.
