Hydrant Flushing Begins Monday

City crews will be testing and flushing the fire hydrants starting Monday.

He city says this is an annual maintenance program crews have to do under the fire protection and safe water drinking act. The Public Works Department says crews will be working in pairs collect information on the water quality and flow to ensure the hydrants are in working order in case of an emergency. Crews say this information then gets sent to the Timmins Fire Department for its records.

Crews say work will take about nine to 11 weeks, and they will start in the Mountjoy Township, then head west. You may experience some short-term water pressure loss or rust-coloured water while testing is being done in your area. The city says you should not drink or do laundry with the discoloured water. It says it isn’t harmful to your health, but it could stain your laundry. The city says if this happens, you should turn off your tap for 1- to 20 minutes while crews finish the testing, then turn the cold tap on for about 15 to 20 minutes, or until the water colour goes back to normal.

The city says it will be sending out updates as the testing progresses.
