Crime Prevention Week

The Timmins Police are hosting a Crime Prevention Week. Starting Monday and running all week, there will be two different events happening to help keep yourself and your business safe. On November 5th, there will a free community paper shredding day, where you can drop sensitive documents off at the Police station to have them shredded. There will also be a crime prevention session for business owners, where you can learn ways to keep your business safe.

The two times you can drop off documents to be shredded are on November 5th, from 1-3 PM and then again from 4-7 PM. The police will be outside of the parking garage to collect documents.

The information session for business owners is on November 4th, from 8:30 AM – 10 AM. You can register with the Chamber of Commerce.

When should you shred personal documents?

Junk Mail – Shred Immediately
Tax Documents – Keep for seven years and then shred
Pay Stubs – Shred after one year
Medical Documents – Shred after one year
Insurance Documents – Shred after five years
Utility Bills – Shred after paid

Police Chief John Gauthier also made the comment to be careful what you post on social media. He says too many times he sees posts about going away on vacation, which leaves your house susceptible to a break and enter. He also says the same principle works on a smaller scale, like posting about going out for dinner with the whole family. Gauthier says you never know where that information is going to end up, and a simple way to guard yourself from that is not post it.
