Northern College Prepares for Traditional Powwow

Culture and life will be celebrated at Northern College this weekend.

The school will be holding its 17th annual Powwow, with this year’s theme being around remembering and honouring our sisters and brothers. Indigenous Student Advisor Joseph Nakogee says it’s really focusing on the missing and murdered aboriginals across Canada.

Nakogee says the Aboriginal Student Union started this event on campus 17 years ago to bring more knowledge and culture to the school. He says the event has grown over the years, with this year featuring traditional dancing, druming, vendors and crafts for children.

He adds that this is not only a ceremony to celebrate culture, but to also reflect on the past and break some stereotypes.

Nakogee says this event is open to everyone to come out whether it’s for an hour or the whole weekend. He says the main thing to do is to listen to the emcee describing the different events and their significance.

The event gets started at 12:00pm on Saturday and runs through Sunday.
