Timmins Celebrates National Tartan Day

National Tartan Day is being celebrated in Timmins.

Locals with Scottish heritage is celebrating the day the declaration of Arbroath was signed in Scotland in 1320 to be alleviated by English rule.

Highland Dance Teacher Marnie Lapierre says it’s important to celebrate the culture and open up a conversation on the history.

Lapierre says it will be great to celebrate this year with the official Porcupine Tartan within the city.

The Porcupine Tartan’s colours represent different aspects of the city including gold for the gold in the ground, yellow for the sun and blue for the lakes. This tartan was officially adopted as the official city tartan in 2016 and now hangs in Council Chambers above the Mayor’s chair.

Lapierre says everyone is invited to celebrate by listening to bagpipes, wearing plaid and learning a little bit about the Scottish heritage.
