Hollinger Park Fencing Sparks More Conversation at Council

Local residents are asking Timmins City Council to reconsider the timing of the Hollinger Park remediation work.

Council has voted to start remediation work to the park and splash pad this summer which would fence off the park surrounding Stars and Thunder, making all of Hollinger Park inaccessible during the eight day festival.

Local resident Leena MacDonald says she has received dozens of calls from families and even schools showing their disappointment of the decision.

MacDonald says council is just blocking off the park so people who can’t afford to go to Stars and Thunder can’t sit and listen to the artist performing and enjoy the atmosphere. She says she is just looking for a re-consideration on this decision because putting up a fence will cost the tax payers extra money in terms of putting up the fence and security to man it.

Mayor Steve Black says it’s not just soil remediation work that is being done. He says the plans also include adding a soft base to the splash pad, expanding, and levelling off the area, as well as updating the drainage in the park.

He says any councillor can bring this motion back for consideration if they choose to.
