Police Warn Businesses of “Poker Scam”

A warning is being issued after a report of a scam involving a local contractor and out-of-town “investors”.

The Timmins Police Service says on November 27th, a local contractor went to a Timmins hotel conference room for a business meeting with some people who identified themselves as investors looking to set up a project in the area. The contractor told police that the “investors” where playing a poker-type card game while waiting for others to arrive.

Officers say by the end of the game, the contractor owed the others money. Allegedly when the funds were handed over, the suspects ended all communication. TPS says the contractor lost several thousands of dollars.

Officers say similar incidents have been reported in other communities and anyone with more information is asked to call police.
