The City Examines the Potential for a University in Timmins

Bringing a stand-alone university to Timmins may not be the best option, but there are a few ideas that could work.

This according to Dr. Ken Coates who has been tasked by the city, Timmins Economic Development Corporation and Northern College to research if Timmins could sustain a university.

Coates 57 page report says a stand-alone university wouldn’t be the best option because of the population and demographic in Timmins, but options like a college-university partnership, satellite campus and alternative university training would work in this region.

President of Northern College and TEDC Chair Fred Gibbons says this report gives everyone a lot to think about.

Coates says the city needs to ask if it needs a physical institution that says it’s the University of Timmins, or does it need the training programs and opportunities so people are getting jobs. Coates says he believes the latter is more important.

He adds there is a huge need for university opportunities in Timmins, but also an opportunity to be creative and find a Northern solution that fits the North.
