Tahoe Canada Pours its Millionth Ounce of Gold in Timmins

The one-millionth ounce of gold has officially been poured at Tahoe Canada’s Bell Creek Mine just north of Porcupine.

The first bar was poured eight years ago in 2009 when the mine was owned by Lakeshore Gold. Vice President of Operations Peter Van Alphen says this is a significant accomplishment for the company.

The gold bar containing the one-millionth ounce weighs about 55 pounds, is worth $1.2-million and is about 88 per cent gold. Mill Superintendent Dave Felsher says this bar will be sent to a refinery to upgrade it and remove all the excess minerals, including silver and copper, to bring it up to 99.9 per cent gold. Felsher says then it will be sold to make things like wedding rings.

Van Alphen says over the past eight years production has been steady, but there’s more work ahead with the expansion of both the Bell Creek and Timmins West mines. He says the Bell Creek Mine will double its production with new infrastructure opening in the middle of next year.

Below are more pictures of the pour.
