Study to Begin Whether Miners Inhaling Aluminum Dust Developed Neurological Diseases

It could be a windfall for former Northern Ontario gold and uranium miners or their survivors.

The province will study if these miners came down with neurological diseases as a result of inhaling aluminum dust. Inhaling aluminum was a common practice for decades because it was thought to protect a miner’s lungs while underground. The practice was stopped when the method became doubtful.

Janice Martell of Elliot Lake has argued for years that the dust causes things like Parkinson’s which her late dad developed after leaving the mines. Martell says she’s grateful the issue will now be studied.
