Council Votes Against Covering Dubeau’s Legal Fees

Timmins City Council will not be covering Councillor Rick Dubeau’s legal fees.

Dubeau was charged with one count of corruption of a municipal office last Thursday for allegedly approaching a business in Timmins and soliciting a sales transaction that would benefit him personally in exchange for his help as a member of council.

Dubeau put a motion forward to have the city cover his expenses. City Clerk Steph Palmateer says councillors aren’t covered by the city’s insurance policy under certain exclusions, including charges under the Criminal Code. CAO Dave Landers says the city lawyer recommended not moving forward with the request.

None of the councillors showed support for the request.

Dubeau will appear in court on November 7th.
