Special Olympic Athletes Return Home from National Games

Timmins Special Olympic athletes are home from Vancouver, and waiting to hear if they will make it one step further. The Special Olympic 2014 Vancouver Games are the national games for Canadian athletes, and if they qualify, they will move on to the Special Olympic World Summer Games in LA next year.

The Special Olympics Ontario regional coordinator Diane Wahlman says she has a hunch. “Our power lifters cleaned house, each one of them came home with medals, at least four medals,” says Wahlman. “I have a suspicion that one of our power lifters is going to qualify for worlds.”

The power lifters who medalled are:

Andre Goulet – Four gold medals
Paul Perreault – Four gold medals
Richard Dwyer – One gold and three silver medals
Eric Kaijia – One gold and three silver medals

Timmins also had soccer players travel to Vancouver, where they won a bronze medal after moving up from a C division to an A division.

The soccer players who won Bronze are:
Joshua Armstrong, David Jackson, Samantha Leblanc, Tina Labelle, Eric Ouellet, Joshua Wahlman, Nicole Ferguson, Jason Tremblay, Julie Plourde, and Brandon Kelly.

13 athletes traveled to Vancouver in total, with seven coaches and volunteers who train and ensure the safety and health of the athletes. The results will come out in the fall, and then they will know if anyone has made it to the World Summer Games.

“Our athletes from Timmins did absolutely excellent,” says a proud Wahlman.
