Police releasing last minute safety tips for trick-or-treaters tonight

Halloween is upon us, and local police units are sending out some last minute safety tips for trick-or-treaters. OPP Staff Sergeant Baldassare Nuccio says to bring a flashlight when going out after dark, and make sure all candy is inspected by an adult.

He says never go into the home of someone you don’t know while out trick-or-treating. He also notes if a home isn’t lit up, or has an obstructed walkway, give it a pass.

Timmins Police Constable Rick Lemieux has also released his own list of safety tips:

  • Use a flashlight or glow bracelet, to be visible.
  • Stay in groups.
  • No treats are to be eaten until they have been checked by an adult at home.
  • Only trick-or-treat in well known neighbourhoods at homes that have a porch light on.
  • Never enter a stranger’s home or car for a treat!
  • Costumes should be short enough so that they don’t cause the child to trip or fall.
  • Masks should fit securely and allow you to see well or use face paint instead.
  • Walk, DON’T RUN across the street. Cross the street at the corner or at a cross walk.
  • Remain on well lit streets and when possible, use the sidewalk.
  • Plan the route and stick to it!
