Timmins is going to be looking at the options when it comes to rotating recycling and garbage pickup in the winter months. The idea was pitched by Councillor Andre Grzela during this week’s budget meeting, who is looking for the bins to be collected every other week.
Grzela says it’s time to see what kind of money this could save the city. He says he’s just pitching the winter months because there could be issues with bears in the summer. Grzela says his own family of four, which includes a baby in diapers, only needs to put out their garbage every three weeks, and notes other residents he’s spoken to also feel they can manage bi-monthly pick up.
He says this could save some tax dollars, and references other cities like Ottawa and Barrie who rotate their pickup schedules.
City staff has to look at the logistics of the pitch, as contracts for pickup have already been signed. A report will be coming back to the council table.
