As the creepy clown craze makes its way into Timmins, local police officers are reminding the public to stay safe. TPS Constable Rick Lemieux says if you do see a clown out in public, don’t approach them and call the police. He says chances are its just a prank, but it’s better the police deal with it. He says trespassing charges may be laid on the clown, if appropriate. If they aren’t doing anything illegal, Lemieux says the police will still speak with them about the dangers of the prank.
Lemieux says he’s in the schools all the time, and a lot of kids are scared about this phenomenon. He says this prank can also be dangerous for those dressing as clowns, as so-called clown hunters are appearing and commenting on social media. A lot of remarks threaten the clowns, and Lemieux says it’s now gone past the point where it’s just a prank.
Lemieux also notes that kids can stay safe this Halloween by going out trick-or-treating with parents. He says he doesn’t recommend kids go out on their own, but if they do make sure they are in groups. Lemieux is also sending out the following tips to ensure kids are safe and having fun this Halloween.
- Use a flashlight or glow bracelet, to be visible.
- Stay in groups.
- No treats are to be eaten until they have been checked by an adult at home.
- Only trick-or-treat in well known neighbourhoods at homes that have a porch light on.
- Never enter a stranger’s home or car for a treat!
- Costumes should be short enough so that they don’t cause the child to trip or fall.
- Masks should fit securely and allow you to see well or use face paint instead.
- Walk, DON’T RUN across the street. Cross the street at the corner or at a cross walk.
- Remain on well lit streets and when possible, use the sidewalk.
- Plan the route and stick to it!
