Ontario’s Regional Chief raising concerns about the inquiry into missing and murdered Indigenous women

Isadore Day is raising some red flags over the recently announced inquiry into missing and murdered Indigenous women. He says the inquiry is not going to examine how police agencies investigated cases, which he says is a necessity if there is going to be justice. This is a common complaint about the inquiry, of which the five commissioners were announced this week.

The commissioners are expected to recommend how to deal with disproportionate rates of violence and crime against Aboriginal girls and women. Day says he wants the inquiry to examine the factors driving a systemic, high rate of violence against Indigenous women and girls and the role of justice institutions like police forces and coroners’ offices.
