Federal government taking criticism for pulling Algoma Central passenger train funding

The Northern and Eastern Ontario Rail Network is slamming the federal government over the lack of funding for the Algoma Central passenger train. NEORN says their recent decision to revoke their annual funding is an indication of the level of inequality between urban and remote transportation priorities.

The lobby group says northern Ontario is held to a different standard than the south, and says the train service is essential to the region. The feds pulled their $2.2 million funding once in 2014 according to NEORN, who says they are now doing it again.

NEORN says the north has a road system that is increasingly fragile due to climate change, natural disasters, and car crashes. The lobby group says northern Ontario is left with little to no transportation options when disaster strikes.

NEORN also says there are a number of economic and social benefits to having reliable passenger train services in northern communities.
