City council moving forward with aquatic centre planning

Timmins council is taking the next step for the potential new aquatic centre. A 7-2 vote on Monday gave the green light to put a tender out to do an environmental assessment at both locations. That will look at Archie Dillon and the 655 site, to see how feasible each option is. The cost of that work is still up in the air, as the city is just putting the tender or RFP out now.

Mayor Steve Black says this work will provide some answers when it comes to the 655 option, which would be across from Gillies Lake. He says they’ll be able to get enough information on the soil to decide whether or not it would actually be feasible, or if would be too expensive and need too much remedial work to be considered.

When it comes to funding the actual project, Black says that will have to begin if council agrees to start the construction. Right now, the project is still in the planning phases, and could potentially be halted after the environmental assessment. However, Black says there is a $1 million grant through the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation they can apply for. Aside from that, the city will have to lobby businesses and the province to help fund the project.

That will only happen once the results of the environmental assessment are done, and council debates the merits of a pool versus the cost.
