Kapuskasing one step closer to getting a medical marijuana facility

A booming new industry could soon be coming to Kapusksasing. The town is currently waiting back to see if they are approved for a medicinal marijuana production facility. Kapuskasing’s economic development officer Andre Robichaud says this is an opportunity for the town to get involved in a new emerging industry. Robichaud estimates the dispensary would create up to 40 new jobs in Kapuskasing.

The town has been talking with CannAssist, a medical marijuana distributor since 2014. CannAssist has proposed a 29,000 square foot facility at the Kapuskasing Airport where the medical marijuana would be processed and prepared for sale. The proposed facility would have security built almost to the same standards as a bank or pharmacy.

For other medical marijuana producers it has taken anywhere from two to three years to get government approval. Since there’s such a small window for construction in Northern Ontario, Robichaud is hopeful they are able to get started this year.
