Smoking bylaw vote deferred to August

Timmins city council has not made a decision on changes to the smoking bylaw. Council debated the issue again last night, which stems from a pitch by the Porcupine Health Unit to move smokers nine metres away from a business entrance way.

However, when the time came for a vote, Councillor Andrew Marks asked for a deferral, saying the BIA needs some input. He says they have their homework to do on the issue, and referenced a report from the Timmins Chamber of Commerce. The chamber surveyed over 800 businesses, 65 per cent of which support the change. Marks says the BIA may look into creating its own report with its board.

Council was on board with the deferral, and a vote will come back in mid-August.
