Whitney Public School is closing

The Ontario North East District School Board has voted to close Whitney Public School. The decision came down at their regular board meeting yesterday after months of an Accommodation Review process. Board Chair Doug Shearer says it has been a very tough decision, but they believe it’s in the vest interest of the students.

In September, Whitney students will be sent to Golden Avenue Public. Meantime, earlier this year the board made the decision to move grade 7 and 8 students from both schools to Roland Michener Secondary School. There has also been a motion to rename the new English Public JK to Grade 6 school.

Vice-Chair Bob Brush says combining the two schools will be of great value. He says through consolidation, there will be the development of an Early Learning program with a designated Early Childhood Educator (DECE).
