The Temiskaming OPP has made an arrest in connection to a forest fire that was burning out of control in the area of Coleman Township. It happened in late May, and was sparked by fireworks that were being set off. The fire started small but grew out of control, forcing the MNRF to dispatch a fire crew, helicopters, and water bombers.

The blaze is now out, and four men have been charged. They range in ages from 18 to 21, and are all facing charges of leaving fireworks un-extinguished in the forest. The OPP is taking the opportunity to release the following fire safety tips:

  • If you observe a wildfire, call 911 and evacuate your family and pets to a safe location
  • Spring grass fires can be destructive. Seek alternatives by considering composting or using your local landfill
  • Do NOT toss a cigarette out of your vehicle window and ensure that cigarette butts are properly extinguished before being discarded anywhere
  • Assure safe campfire practices
  • You can’t have a fire in a restricted fire zone. This includes all grass and debris burning, campfires, fire places and fire pits
  • Plan fire safety techniques and teach them to your family
