A pitch to extend the mineral exploration tax credit shot down by the federal government

A pitch from Charlie Angus to extend the mineral exploration tax credit from one year to five was shot down by the Trudeau Liberals. The MP for Timmins-James Bay says the government isn’t understanding the importance of exploration for northern communities, and a one-year extension isn’t enough.

He says it’s not sufficient to create the kind of climate needed in terms of stability for exploration and development, when we’ve seen a 90 per cent downtown in exploration since 2007. Angus also points out there have been layoffs across Canada in terms of exploration projects.

Angus says supporting an extension of the mineral exploration tax credit isn’t rocket science. He says this would have sent a strong message to a struggling industry that the federal government understands the need to maintain a healthy exploration community
